First of all, sorry i have been AWOL. The O'Neill Puppetry Conference has kept me occupied for a while. I'll be posting many films from this years conference very soon.
I normally do not publish Muppet related posts. Many other blogs do. I love the Muppets. They are why I do what I do. I'm very fortunate to have worked for, and continue to, work for them. I like to write about puppet things that not very many people are talking about. I want to make sure the rest of puppetry does not get lost. I make an exception here to acknowledge someone who gave a Muppet related project the love and respect it deserves.
There are a ton of videos like this one on the internets. Most are horrible and "gag-y" ("Wouldn't it be funny if Ernie sang this! I mean-if we were stoned?"). They are slapped together in a matter of minuets, disregarding lip-sync, setting...basically ignoring the puppetry.
This video is the exception. It is nearly perfect. It is a love letter to The Muppet Show. As you will see, this video goes through a basic episode of The Muppet Show, starting with the show open, then using a great variety of the shows segments. I love that they chose some of the more surreal segments that were my favorite as a kid, like "Ragg Mopp" and "Java" and...well I'll leave it up to the other Muppet Nerds to call out the segment with the feather boas on green screen. Oh, and "Pigs In Space"!
But mostly I love that the editor, the GENIUS editor, cared to match the lip-sync, and the piano hits, and the guitar strums, and the dancing, and the fake Moog gag from the Debbie Harry episode! (Eat it, Muppet nerds!) The same care and love that most puppet artists would have put into this project. And the same care and love that Jim Henson and his whole team put in back in England in the early 70's.
Enjoy!
